Each child will have a reading minute tracker and game sheet created for them that will be kept in the Children’s Department for the duration of SRC. Children will have the option of taking home a reading minute tracker bookmark. No reading time will be recorded until the second visit.
  • The first 100 children to turn in reading minutes each month will receive a special bookmark. The bookmark will be different each month.
  • SRC is separated into age groups. Activities and programs will coincide with the age groups.

SRC Age Groups

Littles: 0 – 5 years

Kids: 6 – 9 years

Tweens: 10 – 12 years

Teens: 13- 18* years  *Must have just graduated high school in 2026

  • Minutes spent reading, listening to audio books, or listening to others read are all trackable minutes. (This includes our story times.)
  • Children (or their adult) are responsible for tracking their own minutes. Children are encouraged to read at least 15 minutes/day. A minimum of 15 minutes is required to participate in SRC on any given day. Minutes may be turned in once/day or at your chosen frequency.
  • Reading minutes must be turned in and recorded prior to the last 15 minutes of the library being open. Minutes will not be accepted after that, as it does not allow enough time for an activity to be completed.
  • Time turned in will be the number of minutes that the child has read between visits. We are not collecting total time read, only the minutes read since the previous visit. Children’s staff will total the times.
  • Children must be present in person at the library to record reading minutes. Phone calls, emails, and third-party relays are not accepted.
  • Tiered prizes are earned based upon age groups and minutes read. Every child has an equal opportunity to earn prizes. Regardless of the number of minutes turned in, only ONE prize will be given per visit. All prizes are subject to change based on availability.
  • Once a child earns all of the tiered prizes, reading minutes will no longer be totaled until the final count at the completion of SRC. Total reading minutes of any child will not be provided at any time.
  • Children must be actively participating in SRC to attend any program or to use computers/gaming devices in the library.
  • The age group that a child begins the summer in will be their age group for the duration of SRC, even if a birthday occurs.
  • Activities and programs are separated into age categories, and only those within the advertised age category may attend that program or complete that activity. Programs for all ages will be indicated as such.
  • Cell phone use is not permitted in any program except in emergency situations.
  • Most programs will require registration. If a program requires registration, the registration will open 2 weeks prior to the program date on our website. (Some programs have limited spaces available, while others need participating numbers for preparation of materials.)
  • Special programs (Brukner/Wild Dayton/SRC Wrap Up Party) will require tickets. Tickets will be available in the Children’s Department two weeks prior to the program date. For special programs with multiple dates (Brukner/Wild Dayton) only one date of a special program may be attended. If the child does not attend the program they were registered for, they will not be able to register for the other program date.
  • Registration is on a first come-first serve basis through the library website. If you are unable to access the website outside of the library, you may visit the library in person to register online if there is still availability. Registration will not be accepted over the phone.
  • All reading minutes must be turned in by Friday, August 7th at 5:15p.m. by the participating child in person, in the Children’s Department. No minutes will be accepted after this time.
  • Reading minutes and participation will be totaled after the completion of SRC for the Top Reader and Most Participation prizes in each age group. Prizes for participation are based upon the total number of visits to the library to participate in SRC. Winners will be contacted individually and a list of winners will be posted on Friday, August 21st to the Piqua Public Library social media accounts and at the Children’s Department desk.
