COLLECTION
INTRODUCTION AND HISTORY
The Robert M. and Stella F. Hulsey Collection was accessioned into the Flesh Public Library Archives and Special Collections on 13 September 2006 from the law firm of McCulloch, Felger, Fite, and Gutman. It is housed in two Hollinger boxes containing 42 files. There are no known restrictions on the use of these materials.
Robert M. Hulsey was born 31 May 1912 to James M. and Gertrude Kuntz Hulsey of Piqua. Robert graduated from Piqua Central High School in 1931. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He married Stella F. Goodman on 17 June 1950. In 1971 he retired from the Miller-Meteor Company.
Stella F. Goodman Hulsey was born in Ashland, Kentucky to James and Stella Evans Goodman on 23 August 1914. She graduated from Milford High School in 1931 and in 1936 earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from Marion College. She taught for a year in a mission school in Breathitt County, Kentucky and then for four years at Owensville, Ohio. Stella moved to West Carrollton, Ohio where she taught for eight years before her marriage to Robert Hulsey in 1950 brought her to Piqua. In Piqua she taught for three years at South Street Elementary School and then for eighteen years at Staunton Street Elementary School. She retired in 1971 after 31 years of teaching. The Hulseys had no children.

The journal has a page for each day of the trip listing mileage
driven, where they stopped for lunch and supper, places visited,
departure time and a list of all money expended during the day.

SERIES III: MISCELLANEOUS
File 27 Piqua Civic Band Concert Program – 19 July 1984 – the
concert was dedicated to the memory of Fred Roberts, assistant
conductor of the band from 1948-1970. Mr. Roberts died of a
heart attack while conducting the band in a concert July 1970.
28 PiquaHigh School Commencement Program 3 June 1971 –
note written on the front of the program says, “Stella Hulsey,
My Last Class of Teaching.”

2 War journal of Robert M. Hulsey – enlisted man in the U.S.
Navy (rating not determined) assigned to the USS ALASKA CB-
01 a very large heavy cruiser. The journal begins with the
departure of USS Alaska from Pearl Harbor on 27 January 1945
and ends with the Alaska off the coast of Darien, China on 5
September 1945. The journal contains a very detailed account
of the movements of the Alaska especially as part of Task Force
58 of the 5th Fleet. The journal pages are numbered beginning
with page 1B.
Included in this file is a photo of Robert in the navy blue
uniform.
Also included in the file but NOT a part of the collection
is a printed description of the USS ALASKA CB-01 obtained
from the internet.
3 War Journal of Robert M. Hulsey, U.S.N. from 8 September to
24 December 1945 – the journal covers the occupation of Korea
and patrol off the China coast. Hulsey returned to the U.S. with
theUSS ALASKA by way of Pearl Harbor, San Francisco,
Panama Canal and Boston. He was discharged at Great Lakes
NavalCenter on 23 December 1945 and arrived at home on
Christmas Eve, 1945. This second journal is much more
sketchy and brief than the first journal.
