JAN KOON COLLECTION

INTRODUCTION

MS-127, the Jan Koon Collection, was added to the Flesh Public Library Archives and Special Collections in February, 2006.  It is divided into two Series and twenty-one file folders comprising one Hollinger box.  The material is from the Piqua Board of Education and the American Red Cross, covering the years 1969-1982.  There are no restrictions on the use of this collection.

SCOPE AND CONTENTS

MS-127, the Jan Koon Collection, is housed in one Hollinger box containing twenty-one file folders.  The material is about two subjects: the Piqua City Schools (1969-1982), and the American Red Cross (1974-1981).

SERIES I – Piqua City Schools:  PTA information, material concerning the closing of North Street Elementary School, passage of operating levy and new high school (1981), and miscellaneous school information.

SERIES II – American Red Cross: Disaster Procedure Guidelines and various regulations and procedures, 1974-1981.

HISTORY

MS-127, the Jan Koon Collection, contains information on the Piqua City Schools at a vital time in their history – when citizens of Piqua were considering building the new Piqua High School (1981). This information is very timely and it is interesting to look back from our present perspective, just celebrating the high school’s 25th Anniversary in 2006.

The collection includes various letters and reports urging Piqua’s citizens to support the building of the new high school. It also presents pro’s and con’s on the closing of the North Street School Elementary building. Jan Koon was active at this time in the PTA, and the collection contains information from this organization.

The second half of the collection contains material from the American Red Cross. Jan was active in the Piqua Chapter, serving as Disaster Chairman for Miami County in the 1970’s.

Jan Koon is a Piqua citizen who has been and continues to be very active in the community through the Piqua Area Chamber of Commerce and Access Piqua TV.
