LAUG – MEINDERS – COMER FAMILY COLLECTION
INTRODUCTION
The Laug, Meinders, Comer Family Collection and its companion, MS-213A, The Lucy Laug – City Commission Clerk and City Manager Secretary Records Collection, were accessioned into the Piqua Public Library Archives and Special Collections in December 2011 and January 2012 as a donation by Mrs. Lucy Dee (Comer) Laug and her daughter Ms. Kristi Karen (Laug) Wing. The collection is housed in nine acid free boxes containing 500 files and 34 rolls of 16mm movie film. Ownership and literary rights to these materials have been transferred to the Piqua Public Library and there are no known restrictions on the use of the materials. The processing of this collection was completed by Gary D. Meek, Local History Coordinator, in April 2016.
HISTORY
In August 1865, Herman Henry Meinders, and his extended family (brothers and sisters) came to the United States from Nordhorn, Lower Saxony, Germany and settled in Piqua. Herman Henry (H. H.) Meinders opened a grocery business and his brother, Edwin Meinders, opened a carriage, later bicycle and even later an automobile sales and repair business. H. H. had a number of children, among them a daughter Anna Hannah Meinders born August 25, 1884 in Piqua. According to the family legend, in 1912, arrangements were made to bring John Henry Laug from Nordhorn to the United States with the intention that he would marry Anna Meinders. On April 21, 1913 John Henry Laug arrived in the United States and came to Piqua, but it was not until October 16, 1915 that John and Anna were married. In 1926 John Laug began a very successful career as an agent with the Prudential Life Insurance Company of America, remaining with the company for 27 years. The marriage of John and Anna produced one son, George Herman Laug, born in Piqua on January 26, 1926. John and Anna traveled extensively during their lives together. John died December 30, 1971 and Anna died February 9, 1973.
George grew up in Piqua, attended Piqua City Schools and graduated from Piqua High School in 1943. George served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945. After the war George attended the University of Cincinnati receiving the Degree of Mechanical Engineer in 1951. While in Cincinnati George met Lucy Dee Comer (known as Dee to family and friends). George and Lucy Dee were married in September 1951. After graduation and marriage, George began a career with the French Oil Mill Machine Company of Piqua, Ohio as an engineer. In approximately 1963 Lucy Laug went to work as a secretary in the office of the city manager of Piqua, Ohio and in 1977 she became the Clerk of the Piqua City Commission. Both George and Lucy retired from their respective jobs in July 1989. The marriage of George and Lucy produced two children, Kristi Karen Laug and Kirk Douglas Laug. George Laug died on May 11, 2001 and Lucy died on March 13, 2012.

3 Photo album of processed photographs as they were returned from the developer. The photos are dated January 9-24, 1994 but this date is not accurate because the camera date program had not been properly set and the photos were taken in the fall. The album includes photos of the Laug house on Spiker Road, a little league football game, and the Laug graves in Forest Hill Cemetery. The photos were probably taken some time after 2000.

One man (probably John Laug) is dressed in an army enlisted dress uniform as would be typical of the pre-World War I German home guard of draftee army, one man dressed in a navy sailor suit. The other two men and the ladies are in traditional German dress c. 1900. The group may be John Laug, his wife Anna and other members of the Meinders family. Negative is c. 1920’s.

In this folder are documents relating to John Laug’s work from 1908-1913 as a Chauffeur including [1] three letters that appear to constitute a contract for the lease or purchase of an automobile from Schiermeier & Co., Osnabruck dated 1908, 1909 and 1910; [2] twelve letters from individuals, hotels and restaurants which appear to be in the form of contracts for services.
13 Hunting license issued to Jan Hindrik Laug in Bentheim (a county in Lower Saxony that includes Nordhorn), Germany – the license is good from 29 September 1904 thru 29 September 1907.
14 Certificate on the final numbers from the withholding of receipt card (translation) – having to do with the tax system on wages and tips in Lower Saxony and Hannover. There are six cards for John Laug: 1904; 1905; 1906; 1910 (2) and 1911.
15 A “leaving certificate” issued to J. H. Laug from the H.W. Schafer Boiler Factory and Iron Constructions Workshop. The certificate issued 21 January 1907 alleges a working breach of contract.

16 A hand written document, officially sealed, stating that Jan Hindrik Laug was born 1 August 1888 in Frensdorf, Bentheim, Lower Saxony, Germany (Frensdorf was later called Nordhorn) – this is the equivalent of a Birth Certificate.
17 A second hand written statement of birth of Jan Hindrik Laug on July 31, 1888 in Frensdorf, Bentheim, Lower Saxony. This document was dated 15 April 1913 and was signed and sealed by an official in Hanover, the capital of Saxony.
18 Three letters to J. H. Laug from the Hamburg-America Line giving pre-departure instructions and information. The letters are dated March 20; 27; 28, 1913. There is also a Memorandum dated 20 March 1913 to J. H. Laug from Red Star Line and the post mark is Antwerpen.
19 Document from Hamburg-America Line which is the equivalent to a boarding pass on a steamship. It shows payment of 180 marks for third class passage on the ship Kaiserin Auguste Victoria with captain Dempwolf to sail from Hamburg to New York on 17 April 1913.

20 Statements of the account held by John H. Laug in the Deutsche Bank, Berlin in the years 1919-1922. The account fluctuated between 196 and 198 Deutsche Marks.
21 “Acknowledgement 4.00 M charges for the exchequer received on (date) “ – an 11”x 17” sheet containing 100 orange stamps on each side of the page with an official Bentheim cancelation stamp on each two. These may be coupons for interest on a bond. They may be tax stamps or some other receipt for payment. All of the stamps are dated February 5, 1923.
22 Check or bank draft drawn on Piqua Savings Bank Company to Mrs. Geertin Laug to be deposited in her name in the Osnabrieken Bank, Osnabrieken, Germany – dated October 11, 1922 in the sum of 15,000 mons “out of balance” and signed by W. B. DuBois, Cashier.

25 Receipt for a 12 gauge double barreled shotgun, a honor sword and 75 rounds of shot-gun ammunition, which were surrendered by John Laug for the duration of World War I. The receipt is signed by Frank Gehle, Police Chief and is dated April 13, 1917.
26 John Henry Laug – Draft Registration Certificate – dated June 5, 1917 and a Draft Notice of Classification. John was classified as both 4-A [married with dependent spouse] and as 5-E [enemy alien and resident alien].
27 John Henry Laug – [1] Letter from U.S. Department of Labor, Naturalization, in response to his petition for naturalization, he is to meet with a Mr. Kiefer at the office of the Clerk of the U.S. District Court in Dayton. [2] Letter from the Department of Justice enclosing blanks in triplicate for him to fill out to make application for a Presidential exception frorm the classification of alien enemy for the purpose of naturalization. [3] Letter from the Department of Justice acknowledging the receipt of John Laug’s application for Presidential exception. [4] Copy of a study booklet of information that John H. Laug would need to know to pass the naturalization test. [5] Certificate of Naturalization issued September 28, 1920.
28 John Henry Laug – United States of America Passport and was issued February 27, 1923 and was valid for one year.
29 John Henry Laug – United States of America Passport # 3506 and was issued January31, 1949 was valid for 2 years. John was required to get a special permit to travel to Germany from the Department of the Army, Military Permit Office in Washington D.C. and have the permit stamped into his passport. The permit stamp was received February 15, 1949 and was valid for one trip to the British Zone of Germany before July 1, 1949.
30 Document from the Bipartite Control Office, Food, Agriculture and Forestry Group APO757 and signed by Stanley Andrews Chief, Food, Agriculture, and Forestry Group. The document is in both English and German and it grants John Henry Laug, Passport #3506, the right to receive the German normal consumer ration card for a period not to exceed 30 days from February 15, 1949 to July 1, 1949.

31 Letter to Herrn Johann Laug (Mr. John Laug) from Jan Laug in Nordhorn, Bahweg 30, the letters is dated July 4, 1940. The letter had been opened and inspected by the German Army.
32 [1] Notice of a letter being delivered sent to J. H. Laug as evidence that the letter, addressed to Bernhard Wassnik, Nordhorn, Hauu, Germany, was mailed from Piqua on November 24, 1941 was delivered and signed for by B. Wassnik on December 15, 1941 in Nordhorn, Germany. The card was returned to John Laug on August 26, 1942. [2] Letter from John Henry Laug in Piqua to Geertin Laug, Nordhorn-Frensdorf, Grtafschaft Bentheim, Germany. The letter was written on December 7, 1941 On the envelope is stamped “Service Suspended, Return to Sender.”
33 Copy of a newspaper article that appeared in The Piqua Daily Call on July 29, 1942 stating that John Laug had heard from his mother in Germany through the auspices of the U.S. and German Red Cross.

36 Letters written by Anna Laug to her husband John Laug between July 25 and August 1, 1944. There are nine letters written while Anna and her niece, Anita, were on a trip to visit George H. Laug at the Columbus Army Air Station in Columbus, Mississippi. Anna and Anita flew from Dayton to Memphis, Tennessee and then took a bus to Columbus, Mississippi. On their return they took the bus from Columbus to Memphis and then to Metropolis, Illinois to visit family and then home. This trip must have been very expensive during wartime.

40 Advertising cards for a Shoe Repair Shop – In the 1920s John made a brief foray into the shoe repair business, taking over the former Strohmenger Shoe Shop at 428 South Wayne. This business is not mentioned in the Piqua City Directories that were published at the time and so the business was probably very short lived.
41 Letters and cards from National Sportsman Magazine – From 1919 to 1922 (possibly earlier and later) John Laug sold subscriptions to this magazine to people in the Piqua area and based on the number of subscriptions reported as received from John in the letters, he was a very successful salesman. There are 9 letters and 3 cards.
42 Letter dated October 14, 1920 from Weil Bros. & Co., Dealers in General Merchandise, Fort Wayne, Indiana. The letter requests that John send a photograph of himself to include in their “Trappers’ Guide.” John Laug was an avid hunter and trapper.

[2] There is a second letter written by John Laug to the Tax Department of Greene County, June 11, 1926, asking about the amount of tax on lot 1308 Wright View Heights. Laug to his wife, Anna Laug, detailing his trip from New York aboard the White Star Line ship the Majestic to Southampton, England and then by rail to London, by ship across the English Channel and by rail to Nordhorn, Germany. The letter is full of details about the food served, the weather and the activities on the Majestic. The letter begins on March 10, 1923 and it is mailed from Nordhorn on April 12, 1923. John writes that the trip from New York to Cherbourg, France (their first port in Europe) was 3200 miles. According to the letter, John sailed from New York on March 10 and arrived in Nordhorn on March 19, 1923. Officially stamped Bread Carte stub.

43 Diary kept by Anna Meinders of a trip to Europe she and other members of her family and relatives took from May 31 – September 4, 1906. They sailed aboard the Steamer Gneiseneau. Along with the diary in this folder are two post card folios of photographs of pre-World War I Berlin, one is in color and a larger 9” x 6” sepia folio of pre-World War I Berlin photographs.
44 At the beginning of January 1923 John Laug sailed from New York to Southampton, England on a trip to visit friends and relatives in Nordhorn, Germany. He sailed to Europe on the United States Lines ship the S.S. Leviathan; in London he stayed at the Russell Hotel; in Amsterdam he stayed at the Victoria Hotel; in Hanover he stayed at the Hotel Rheinsischer Hof; and in Berlin he stayed at the Continental Hotel. He also stayed with family in Nordhorn. He returned to the United States in May 1923 on the White Star Lines ship the S.S. Majestic. A trunk was shipped to John in Nordhorn, insured for $100, on March 10, 1923. This folder contains memorabilia from his trip including hotel and steam ship brochures and bills of fare.
45 During John Laug’s 1923 trip to Germany he collected and brought home numerous denominations of Germany currency. 1922 was the beginning of the runaway inflation of German currency. In 1913 the conversion was 4.2 Marks / $1, by November 1923, the American dollar was worth 4,210,500,000,000 German marks.
