TERRI HEMMERT – MIAMI COUNTY REPUBLICAN PARTY 1962-1964 CAMPAIGN COLLECTION

 

INTRODUCTION

 

The Terri Hemmert – Miami County Republican Party 1962-1964 Campaign Collection was accessioned into the Piqua Public Library Archives and Special Collections on 24 September 2011 as a donation from Ms. Hemmert.  The collection is housed in two Hollinger boxes containing a total of 68 files. 

 

From the summer of 1962 through 1964 Terri Hemmert, a Piqua Central High School Student (Class of 1966), was a very active volunteer for the Miami County Republican Party.  The majority of this collection represents the candidates and issues on which she worked.  The ownership of these materials has been transferred to the Piqua Public Library and the materials are available for research.  There are no known restrictions on the use of the material in this collection.

 

SCOPE AND CONTENT

 

The Terri Hemmert – Miami County Republican party 1962-1964 Campaign Collection is divided into the following five series:

          1        Letter to Terri Hemmert from Congressman McCulloch dated October 15, 1962.  This letter came with a copy of The Capitol: A pictorial story of the Capitol in general and the House of Representatives in particular.

          2        Letter to Terri Hemmert from Congressman McCulloch praising the “Coke and Campaign Workshop” and asking for further assistance at Republican Headquarters on Saturday, November 3, 1962.

          3        Letter to Terri Hemmert from Congressman McCulloch thanking her and others for their efforts for Republican candidate in the 1962 campaign.

          4        Letter to Terri Hemmert from Congressman William McCulloch, Robert E. Netzley, Elizabeth Matthews, Margaret Geyer and Margaur Tafel thanking her and others for their work during the 1964 election campaign, dated November 2, 1964.  Letter is written on Miami County Republican Party letterhead.

          11      Republican Platform 1964, “For The People” adopted by the Republican National Convention, July 14, 1964 San Francisco, California – from William M. McCulloch, Representative to Congress 4th District of Ohio.

          12      Envelope containing a Guest credentials card and a yellow “Guest” ribbon stating that “this will certify that Terri Hemmert has been designated as a GUEST from the Fourth District to the Republican State Convention, Columbus, Ohio, September 17, 1964.”  The card is signed by Ray C. Bliss, Chairman and Lila Black, Secretary.  The envelope also contains autographs on slips of paper from Chester Paulus, Sheriff; Mabel H. McCulloch; Theodore M. Gray, State Senator; Bob Clawson; Adam Wilgus; Robert J. Huffman; Arthur Haddad; Dale E. Davis; Kathryn M. Casparis, Miami Co. Chairwoman; Earl Mishler; Luther Rike and Robert E. Netzley.

          13      Three different “Re-Elect Congressman William M. McCulloch brochures.  These are the type of brochures that would be handed out at gatherings or stuffed in doors or mailed.

          14      Two Sample Ballots for the 1964 election.  The ballots were sponsored by the Miami County Republican Central and Executive Committee.  On one of the ballots is the results of a mock election held at Piqua Central High School in which the students voted for 9 of the 13 Republican candidates on the local level but supported Lyndon Johnson (Democrat) over Barry Goldwater (Republican) for President.

          15      A hand fan with the pictures of the Republican candidates in Miami County on it.  This was handed out as campaign material during the 1964 election campaign.

          16      William M. McCulloch, Representative to Congress, 4th District of Ohio, Welcomes You to Your Nation’s Capital – brochure containing a aerial photo map of Washington D.C. and identifies important places to visit.  On the back is written, “Best wishes, always, to Terri Hemmert.  Sincerely, William M. McCulloch, 1964.”

          20      Letter to Terri Hemmert and other Republican volunteers from Miami County Republican Committee, signed by Robert E. Netzley, dated November 5, 1962.  The letter is a “thank you” to all volunteers for their time working for Republican candidates in the 1962 election.

          21      Personal letter to Terri Hemmert from Robert Netzley thanking her for her efforts on behalf of Republican candidates dated September 24, 1964.

          22      Memo to Republican teen volunteers titled “Teenage Republican Project” and deals with a Presidential Preference poll of a precinct on September 29, 1964.  The memo is postmarked September 26, 1964.

          23      Two 1964 election sample ballots, one on yellow paper and one on gold paper, sponsored by Miami County Republican Central and Executive Committee, Robert Netzley, Chairman, Laura, Ohio.  The sample ballots contain the photographs of local candidates and also a sample Presidential Ballot.

          24      Hand fan with pictures of local Republican candidates on one side and a message to vote Republican in 1964 on the other side.  Issued by Miami County Republican Committee.

          33      “Meet GOPY Telling a Story of Republicanism Full Time” – a cartoon brochure featuring “GOPY” the Republican elephant – issued by the Ohio Republican Finance Committee

          34      Three editorials printed on both sides of a sheet of 8 ½ x 14 paper.  The editorials champion the jobs growth policies and programs of Governor James Rhodes.  The paper was issued by Charles V. Schwenker in support of the 1962 Rhodes for governor campaign.

 

          SERIES II C:  Goldwater-Miller 1964 election campaign materials

 

          35      Brochures – “Man for Man The Republican Party Offers Better Candidates” – these 2 brochures were produced by the Republican State Central and Executive Committee and covers Presidential, federal, state and local Republican candidates.  One of the brochures is stuffed with local campaign materials exactly as they would have used to hand out on the street or in public gatherings (like the Miami County Fair) or put inside doors.
