CONGREGATIONAL CHRISTIAN UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST COLLECTION

INTRODUCTION

MS-160, The Congregational Christian Church Collection, was accessioned into the Flesh Public Library Archives and Special Collections on June 7, 2007.  It includes annual reports from 1957-1998, church directories and yearbooks, financial reports, and church constitution and by-laws.  The collection encompasses the years 1944-1998 with some gaps in between.

HISTORY

The Congregational Christian Church began in Piqua when a group of people appealed to the Mission Board of the Christian Church to send a pastor to organize the church.

There were 115 persons, representing 47 families and 36 households.  J. Dorsey Buchanan and George Lyons were chosen and ordained deacons.  Samuel S. Parks was elected clerk and J.W. Orr was chosen treasurer.  The Rev. S.S. Newhouse, D.D. was called to organize the congregation and became pastor for a number of years.

The first public service was conducted in the old Music Hall (Elk’s Building) in November, 1890.

The lot at Broadway and Greene was purchased in November 1891, at a cost of $3,000.  In 1895 the completed house of worship was dedicated, although the Sunday school rooms had been in use since 1894.

An educational building was added and dedicated in April 1929 to house the growing Sunday school classes.  Included in the new addition were offices and the first floor fellowship hall.

The sanctuary was remodeled extensively in 1934.  In 1957, a merger with the Evangelical and Reformed Church occurred in Cleveland, and this church became part of the United Church of Christ, which was the name adopted by the new denomination.
