Darrell Taylor HOF

2002 HALL OF FAME WINNER Darrell Taylor (1896 – 1967) Taylor was a life-long resident of Piqua. He organized and ran his own auto repair business in Piqua for over twenty years. Active in his church, he organized the Taylor Tots to sing at local and regional church programs. He served as the first president of the local chapter of the N.A.A.C.P. and led a passive sit-in at the bus station luncheon counter in 1947 that ended restaurant segregation in the city. Taylor was the first African-American to run for City Commission in the twentieth century. His commitment to the Civil Rights Movement resulted in the ruination of his business by those who resented his actions and views.
